Hi Cody, Battambang might be a good choice. The problem is that anywhere English isn’t as widely spoken, the salaries are also much lower. However, they really need English teachers in the provinces, so if you want to learn Khmer, I’d say move outside of the major cities and towns. Apparently there’s a small expat scene in Kampong Cham, even!

I’m coming Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» next month and I plan to stay for a few years if not more. First I’m gonna vacation for a week or more in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang, and Sihanoukville before picking a city to get a teaching gig in. Are there any cities that you think might be better for learning in? A city where I could find an ESL job that pays a halfway decent salary but where English is not so prevalent? I was thinking Battambang might be my best bet. Are there any other cities that might be better. I find it’s easier to learn the local language in places where English isn’t as widely spoken.

This one is the most famous in town: /phnom-penh/learning-khmer-khmer-for-foreigners-at-rupp/

There’s also a recommendation for LEC in the comments of that post, so check there.

Took me 2 years of daily effort of learning 6 words a day to become proficient. Now here 11 years I never speak English. But all the expats I have met NONE have bothered to learn and something I have difficulty understanding and to this day would like it explained.

I enjoy the social interaction, definitely benefit with the lower cost negotiations with all especially the greedy tuk tuks but it has saved the wallet of several berang in bars when I overheard local prostitutes planning a raid on the pocket of an intended “customer”.

Not an easy language but invaluable if you intend to stay here.
